The Respiratory System

Virtual School Notes - Class 1 (November 8th, 9th, 2020)

Let's Discuss The Problem Solving Process

Lesson 14 - The Respiratory System

Student Reading

The pharynx (plural: pharynges) is the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, and above the esophagus and larynx – the tubes going down to the stomach and the lungs. It is found in vertebrates and invertebrates, though its structure varies across species.

Student Reading

Bronchi are plural for bronchus and represent the passageways leading into the lungs. The first bronchi branch from trachea, and they are the right and left main bronchi. These bronchi are the widest and they enter the lung. After entering the lungs, the bronchi continue to branch further into the secondary bronchi, known as lobar bronchi, which then branch into tertiary (segmental) bronchi.

Student Reading

Alveoli are tiny air sacs in your lungs that take up the oxygen you breathe in and keep your body going. Although they’re microscopic, alveoli are the workhorses of your respiratory system.

You have about 480 million alveoli, located at the end of bronchial tubes. When you breathe in, the alveoli expand to take in oxygen. When you breathe out, the alveoli shrink to expel carbon dioxide.

ELA: Attentive Listening, Critical Listening  (2) Maths: Sorting, Venn Diagrams  (3) Science: Respiratory System

  1. Watch video on Respiratory System https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I5e3touUQs

  2. Complete these sentences based on the video:

      1. People breathe through their _______ and _______

      2. People breathe in _________

      3. Air has _______

      4. People need _________ to live

      5. The ________ are the parts of the human body that air goes into; they bring oxygen to the blood

      6. Lungs breathe out ______ _______

      7. Waste is something the body cannot use, Carbon Dioxide is _____

      8. The part of the body that puts Oxygen into the Blood is called: ___ __________

        <>______

    ———————————————————————————–

  3. Create a Venn Diagram displaying the following situation:

    1. “There are 6 students who know that humans breathe in (inhale) Oxygen. There are 8 students who know that humans breathe out (exhale) Carbon Dioxide. There are 5 students who know that humans BOTH breathe out Oxygen and breathe in Carbon Dioxide.” Use one tally mark to represent each student

    2. (Tip: Refer to this image if you’re not sure how to use Venn Diagrams)
